Our penultimate day on this long walk, we were well set up by a great cooked breakfast at Craik Na Dav. We’ve been pretty restrained on the full Scottish front and I was glad to have made an exception for this one. Craik Na Dav is an all round cracking B & B, the bed was so comfortable I could still have been there now! A good pillow is grossly underrated and I must be getting old to place so much importance on it!
Going Up: The High Route
Our B & B was right on the Great Glen Way which was a bonus on setting off. Initially we followed the very minor road that went steeply up, not a road you’d fancy driving in winter, before moving onto a track that went up equally steeply, albeit with more switchbacks.

The track dropped down slightly to a stream before heading up again. We continued climbing until we reached the Viewcatcher. With beautifully clear skies and sunshine this was the perfect day for it!

Thereafter we had a bit of descent before climbing again. I was glad that I’d worn my shorts as it was hotter than it’s been so far. I was also grateful of Factor 50 suncream, such was the heat from above!

We plodded along, enjoying the sunshine. The midges must have had a heavy night as they were nowhere to be seen!

Going Down
As we descended, the views were fantastic. This is why we take the high route; you just don’t get this fantastic view from the loch side.

The single track path descended through the trees. This provided some welcome cooling air, particularly in areas that were lacking sunshine.

Out of the trees, the views opened up once more with stunning views of Loch Ness. I never tire of these beautiful scenes.

Good Tracks and Loch Views
Past the windshelter, we followed a good track to continue the descent. The views continued to be special, all the more so with the beautiful skies of a wonderful Scottish summer’s day.

As our legs started to get a bit weary, we yearned for a wee break and were finally rewarded by the Loch Ness Pottery Clay Works where we enjoyed tea and cake. I also enjoyed perusing the beautiful pieces on offer. At some point in the future I will have some of these gorgeous mugs at home!
The Road to Drumnadrochit
The last few miles from the Pottery to Drumnadrochit were the least inspiring of the day if I’m honest. We followed a minor road for a bit.

Further along a small path gave us the option of softer terrain underfoot.

After a few miles we turned off and went through a couple of gates to head down into Drumnadrochit village. Having enjoyed an ice cream, we checked into our B & B for the night (Morlea) which is a lovely place to stay. Dinner in Fiddler’s Restaurant has replenished us once again. Think we’ll sleep well tonight!
