Summer is definitely here with sunshine again! A bit breezier than last week when we were in the west, but that’s welcome when the sun is beating down.
Yesterday saw me ‘running’ the Clais Fhearnaig circuit, a wee gem from Walkhighlands. The intention was to run but heat, some of the terrain and the stunning views led to me going more slowly than planned.
Starting at Mar Lodge
The route officially starts at the Linn of Quoich, but I decided to go from Mar Lodge instead, beginning with a run over the private bridge to pick up the route. This then took me along the minor road to the Linn of Quoich parking area.
Linn of Quoich
Leaving the car park for the Linn of Quoich the path cut off sharply and went up through the trees.

I was then quickly rewarded with some open views and gorgeous purple heather, very much the backdrop of the day.

Continuing on, I took a very slight detour to see the Punchbowl at the Linn of Quoich.

The river was relatively low so I took time to explore the rocks further and take in the views.

From here, the route guide states that the bridge should not be crossed. I hadn’t read it properly, so crossed the bridge and went on a wee bit before checking the map and doubling back on myself to find the correct route.
Glen Quoich
This saw the views open up once more with a decent track to follow.

This kept the river close, twisting and turning alongside it.

There were further opportunities to get down to explore closer to the river again. along this section I met a walker, the only other person I’d seen thus far.

The track became rougher and less easy to run on, much of it single track from this point.

There followed an interesting section across what could be overflow from the river if in spate. There appeared to be some light track higher up this eroded section.

This section was short and lead to another single track path with yet more lovely views.

Thereafter the scenery really opened up and the hills were showcased in their true majesty.

The path turned after this, heading upwards on single track again. I tried to keep some semblance of running going here, but suspect anyone seeing me in action would just think I had a very odd walking style, the upper body arm movements mimicking running with the legs walking!

Clas Fhearnaig Lochan
Reaching the top of the single track, there was a view of the lochan way ahead. Getting closer, it was very picturesque with reeds growing across the shores.

After the lochan I passed two mountain bikers. They had their work cut out as it single track path was narrow and a bit bumpy.
I then had the joy of heading down, all the way back to the main track. This was rather enjoyable after the elevation gains I’d enjoyed prior to this point.

Once back on the main track it was flatter and easier running back to Mar Lodge.

Completing the Loop
Reaching the minor road I had to run along it for a short time before veering off onto the Mar Lodge Estate road. A gate then took me along the riverside path once again, avoiding the estate buildings.

After what seemed like an eternity (only because I was getting tired), I spotted the bridge back across the river and knew that I was done.

Thereafter all that remained was to get back to Braemar to refuel. Too hot for coffee and cake, I opted for a baked tattie instead! A very enjoyable day all in all.
