Living My Best Life!

It was blowin’ a hoolie today so definitely not a hill day. The MWIS forecast suggested conditions that would see you blown over so going high just wasn’t an option.

The decision was made to drive down to Corrieshalloch Gorge instead, joking that we were practising for our old age, heading for a drive in the car and a gentle stroll. As it was, we only got the drive. It was minging when we arrived at the NTS car park, the rain pelting down with very little let up, and, after sitting for about half an hour, we gave up and headed back to Ullapool. Typically enough, within ten minutes of leaving the car park, the weather improved.

We ended up back in Ullapool for the day, having a coffee, a local walk along the riverside path, and a relaxed afternoon reading with a fine piece from JoJo’s Café.

All in all, a pretty mediocre day. Until …

The Seafood Shack

This is one of the best places to eat in Ullapool in our opinion. With a menu that changes depending on what’s come off the boat, it’s always worth a visit.

Having sampled the haddock wrap earlier in the week, tonight I opted for fishcakes. I swithered, almost changing my mind as the wrap had been so good. I was not disappointed! Delicious fare!

The Calmac Ferry

To top off a lovely late afternoon , as we headed towards The Arch Inn for an aperitif, we spotted the Calmac ferry loading for the afternoon sailing to Stornoway. Due to the adverse weather today, very strong winds (albeit warm), the morning boat had been cancelled.

Bruce humoured me, also intrigued by the methodical way in which the vehicles were being loaded. Some of the HGVs on first …

Then a load of cars up the ramp onto an upper deck, the ramp lifting up when loaded.

Finally more HGVs to finish loading. A seriously impressive effort for those loading, manoeuvring these vehicles with ease.

Bruce thought when the back door closed that his time here was done. No such luck, Bruce! Despite the rain now having started, he had to endure a fifteen minute wait for the ferry to set sail!

With conditions as they’ve been today, I’d not fancy being on the boat myself!
